The state of hip hop, R&B, and soul music has undergone a sea change in the last 15 years or so. As each style finds its way into the groove of the other, the mixture struggles to create its next defining sound. That is until a small batch of artists came along. One of them being Anderson Paak.

Chosen as one of the Rolling Stone’s Top 25 songs of 2016, “The Bird” carries childhood troubled stories over a chilled out R&B track. The switch between the horns and piano lends sweet sounds to the somewhat dark narrative. It doesn’t take longer than 10 seconds to feel the tension slip from your body. And, let’s be honest, when is the last time a song has had that effect on you?

Listen to Anderson Paak’s “The Bird” below, and tell us what you think in the comments.
